Yoroidenサムライトルーバー」は、1988年4月30日より、名古屋テレビをキー局に放映された、サンライズが挑む等身大ヒーローキャラクター作品である。大本となる企画は、サンライズ創立メンバーの1人であり玩具メーカーのタカラ(現・タカラトミー)へと転職し、黎明期のサンライズと玩具スポンサーを繋いだ立役者・沼本清海氏が立案。当初、宇宙を舞合にしたバトルヒーローものだった企商は、沼本氏とは旧知の問柄である「装甲騎兵ボトムス」の高橋良輔監督、そして「科学忍者隊ガッチャマン』のベテラン鳥海尽三氏を文芸の中核に据え、ファミコンゲームや、身大ブロテクターヒーローといったプームも取り入れて、日本のをモチーフにした伝奇的要素を盛り込んだバトルアクションへと、サンライズの手でまとめられていった。
監督を務めるのは、高橋監督作品にて演出手腕を磨いた池田成氏。後半の監督を浜津守式が担当。
キャラクターデザインは、長浜3部作などを手掛ける金山明博氏の協力のもと、高橋監督の思友として活躍した塩山紀生氏が手掛けた。ヒロイックで大胆なタッチで綴られたキャラクターたちの持つ存在感は、本作の大きな魅力である。また本作の人気を支えたスタッフとして、村瀬修功氏の存在を忘れるわけにはいかないだろう。その魔な作画によって注目を集め、OVA「外伝」「螺燈新伝説』ではキャラクターデザインも担当。本作のビジュアルイメージに多人な貢献を果たしている。その後、池田監督と再び組んだ「新機動戦認ガンダムW)でもキャラクターデザインを担当し、大きな誘題を集めた。
