What was N.G. Five / NG5? The voice actors for the 5 Samurai Troopers were so popular that the (for a short while) formed a boy band. They toured Japan, attended conventions to sing and dance for audiences. According to the interview from one of the guys, it was incredibly fun and exciting, but horribly exhausting.
What kind of merchandise did they have? Audio cassettes, CDs, telephone cards, LAMI (laminiated) cards, posters, and even released a couple of videos on VHS (what came before DVDs, Blu-ray, and online videos).
What's up with that name "N.G. Five"? What does it mean? "Japan was under occupation by GHQ after WW2."
(Designation used during the Allied occupation of Japan. This refers to the chief executive's General HeadQuarters (GHQ) in Tokyo.)
"The GHQ implemented heavy censorship so that any information that they thought was inappropriate should not be spread. In this censorship, they called Japanese drama and films that didn't pass it NG, abbreviation of No Good. The word remained in broadcasting / movie / entertainment industry even after the occupation was ended, and its meaning changed to refer to 'no good' recording, film or performance. English equivalent is outtake or blooper. And eventually the word was spread out of the industry to the public, where the word means something that is not OK in general."
According to one of the interviews I translated, the group name came about as a bit of an inside joke, since they called themselves the No Good Five which ended up as N.G. Five. (It's also amusing to read them admit how it irked them that their group name was N.G. Five, but fans and some news outlets would write their name as NG5.)
(Only realized after I posted this picture that everyone is pretty much wearing their Trooper's respective color. ^_^U)
Also... bless these precious cosplayers!

Yoroiden Samurai Trooper CD "'89 HARIKIRI YOROI TOUR Telephone Shocking Animate Cassette Collection Special bonus cassette tape <Armor Lore Talk Corner CD of N.G.FIVE's live tour "HARIKIRI YOROI TOUR", and Movic's animate cassette collection 1-4, and "Armor Lore" cassette as a pre-order bonus for "Samurai Trooper Memorials Volume 1 and Volume 2" published by Sunrise. This is a CD of the talk corner during the event of N.G.FIVE's live tour "89 HARIKIRI YOROI TOUR" in 1989...... but sorry, I bought it used, so I don't know the details. I have been a fan since then, but I am from a rural area, so I could not go to any of the events.... The jacket illustration is by Miki Ukai. The content is, as the title says, in the style of Iitomo's Telephone Shocking,
where one by one they appear and talk with the hostess (not sure who she is),
then call the next person and introduce them
(of course, they are waiting in the background since they are in the middle of a live show, with the hostess). The content of the five people's talk and the fans' reactions (screams?)
You can see how tremendously popular they were at that time. This CD gives you a sense of the atmosphere of those days. The recording time is about 34 minutes. The points and contents that I was interested in were.... Mr. Kusao seems serious. There were unfounded rumors spread among fans that he was engaged. Mr. Takemura, the daughter of the owner of the ski resort hotel (the owner's daughter?)
The five of us were invited by a fan of a ski resort hotel (daughter of the owner?),
who offered to pay all transportation and lodging expenses (apparently he was moved but did not go). Ma. Nakamura appeared in movies and on stage.
For some reason, she repeatedly said, "Nozomu is cute" (indeed, she does have a cute voice when you hear it again). Rumors spread that Ms. Sasaki had gotten married. Some fans said that Mr. Kusao and Ms. Sasaki got married. She likes Otafuku Sauce. Nishimura-san There is a contrast event with Mr. Sasaki. He has solo concerts and has released a solo album. He has 28 mistresses, and when he goes out with a woman, she eats, cleans, and washes his clothes for him, and he tips her on the way home, etc. He makes a lot of strange jokes. Also, when he appears on stage, the volume of the background music suddenly gets really loud! If you turn up the volume too loud to hear the talk, you'll be surprised by the background music!

To explain, the Harikiri Yoroi Tour of 1989 was the 5 seiyuu (voice actors) for the Samurai Troopers (you know, Ryou, Shuu, Seiji, Touma, and Shin) having come together to form the singing group NG FIVE. Not only did they release several songs, but they also travelled around Japan for a little while holding this event at several different locations. It was basically the guys being interviewed, calling up random fans to have a short conversation, as well as throwing a concert for the people who came to that live event.
I'm not sure what order this booklet and the audio CD were released, but I'm adding them here because they all belong with this event. First up is the booklet. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Disclaimer : (Short version : This belongs to Sunrise. All I did was translate it into English because I can't read Japanese. Okay, so, TECHNICALLY, the translation (as best as I can get out of an online translation site) reads as Just for you I'll send this song (implying 'I'll send this song over the airwaves just for you' but it doesn't exactally sound... right when translated into English.)
But, come on, it would make WAY more sense as Just for you I'll sing this song

Yeah... there was NO way I was gonna be able to fit all of the romaji and English lyrics all on one page. Unlike the original page that had only Japanese on it, so didn't have to worry about that. So, because of that, we all get 3 different pages! HUZZAH!

Villians always a sad destiny Lonely guy The end is when the hero beats him Occasionally, we even get some applause at our defeat Our face is hidden with by the mask so you can't see it.
Why are we nothing but bad guys Always crying in a corner of our heart.
We want to be heroes We want to be cool. What day will our wish be granted. Oh my God! We want to be heroes We want to make things right We want to see ourselves smiling in the sunset.
Boy's speeding up, We understand your feelings Tears don't suite us We're villians after all Someday even we want a bright future to come Giving us comfort is too much sorrow.
This evil path stretches our chest in advance That is a man's life path his youth
Heroes are useless With that we don't care We must be, not for the first time. Goodbye heroes, we won't complain In this heart we hide our unanswered wish.

In the YST art book (art by the fans but not a doujinshi) Bonnou Kyou (Earthly / Worldly Desires) Paradise there are even a few pages dedicated to N.G. Five. And, wouldn't you know it? I translated that book back in 2019. Enjoy! (I do apologize that the translations may not be 100% absolutely perfect, but hey, at least it gives you some idea of what in the world is being said.
Don't tell them, the Troopers can't talk!
N G FIVE IS SICK!! ( ?? best guess translation ??)
These five guys are getting more and more popular,
so they're getting more attention!
x Cell drawing is from the merchandise for the anime 'Troopers"

NG FIVE have fun during the HARIKIRI armor tour!!
This tour started August 1st and stopped at 4 different locations across the country. (Japan.) This big 'Harikiri Tour' was a great place to hear the guys talk about stuff and sing songs. It was so nice getting to hear the stories they shared.
"Mr. Takemura's (Touma) success of the year" included talking a place he ate at.
Mr. Nakamura (Seiji) sang karaoke to some really good songs. I'm not sure I could do that.
Sasaki Nozomu (Shin) was being all fashionable and kind. "Have a nice day!"
See this profile picture? Well, it's solely to give attention to Tomohiro Nishimura's (Shuu) earring!
A hot blooded gym teacher who specalizes in soccer.
In the (imaginary?) city of Megalopolis, in the year of 2001, the guy's choisen jobs (from left to right) would be a soccer teacher, a heavenly prince of the stars, a father, a part time gigolo, and a baseball player.
This is a group picture of the guys after two on-stage preformances. You can sure tell a difference in their mood after a full week (laugh). Especially for one person in particular.
The guys having lots of fun singing songs.
(I was unable to translate one of the blocks of text because my original scans were old and small.)
On this day, there was also a parody of 'Tears Beneath The Mask" (the one group song for the Mashou from the Yoroiden Samurai Troopers soundtrack). However, at some point, everyone lost track of their specific lines and just ended up singing 'ra ra ra'. Tomohiro Nishimura (Shuu) was trying to sing "Everybody Para Para" (laughs) and was worried about the song cards. Getting it right for the sake of the fans is a big deal! (Translator's note : To be honest, between you and me, I don't think the fans would've minded at all, and simply enjoyed the whole thing.)
How did you get started in the voice acting business?
Kusao Takeshi (Ryou)
I think this is the reason why we all have a TV. Originally, as a kid, like, while watching a TV show, I wanted to go out into a completely different world and have an imaginary adventure. Then, when it was done, be right back at home. (Interview continued on the next page.)
Sasaki Nozomu (Shin) In the beginning, I wanted to act in (live action) dramas, but I felt stuck. I went into Uchi's office, because there were a lot of anime series being worked on there. I gradually got into doing anime and worked on several different shows. These days, it's all anime shows that I'm voice acting for.
Hiroshi Takemura (Touma) In my case, I had a show that I was doing inside of a tiny shop that was inside of a small restaurant. This was about seven years ago. I eventually ended up getting fired from the shop and got into the world of voice acting. I think it all started because I had the feeling of wanting to be a voice actor.
Tomohiro Nishimura (Shuu) I guess I always wanted to do it... music is where my real strength lies at, though.
I like working on anime, and if the two can intermingle, then I'm all good.
Daiki Nakamura (Seiji) Initially, I joined the division for Toshio Furukawa* and, for about 3 years, I wasn't at all aware that it was a place for voice actors. That's what started it for me. (Toshio Furukawa provided voices for Kai Shiden from Mobile Suit Gundam, Piccolo from Dragon Ball, and Ataru Moroboshi from Urusei Yatsura to name only a few roles.)

NG FIVE's public preformance and singing on stange, and a secret picture from it, can be seen here!! This preformance was described in the magazine "Fan Road" back in May.
This issue also described "Samurai Troopers Gaiden (the New York movie)". There's a picture included there that was so awesome, I couldn't sleep for a while after seeing it.
While the guys played an encore of their song 'Jump With Me',
the fans wanted to push closer to the edge of the stage.
Kusao Takeshi (Ryou) question continued from the previous page Back in high school, and in university, I received lead roles to play, but, after a while, the other people fell away from wanting to act. For a year at the university I asked myself what I was doing to do.
What was I going to walk as my path? I ended up asking myself if, instead of live acting (like on TV shows), would voice acting be easier to do? That's when I started feeling better, like, it's as if I knew what path I wanted to take from there.
- With the exception of this tour, would you preform alongside your castmates on other projects? Hiroshi Takemura (Touma) - Ha ha ha, I'd really have to think about that. Tomohiro Nishimura (Shuu) - To be honest, probably not.
- Oh? Why not? Tomohiro Nishimura (Shuu) - Well, I already get plenty of time with these guys the way it is. I'm together all the time in the studio with him (points to Mr. Nakamura (Seji) ).
Daiki Nakamura (Seiji) - Hey, recently it's only been one recording session. Hiroshi Takemura (Touma) - That's because you guys are working on something together. Tomohiro Nishimura (Shuu) - My hope is that one day I'll get to play the legendary role of Kintarou (a hero boy of Japanese folklore who befriended animes and had supernatural strength). Hiroshi Takemura (Touma) - The casting for it is sometime around the next full moon, I think. If you try out for it, you won't be around us. Tomohiro Nishimura (Shuu) - Or, maybe, I'll try out for a role as sone kind of animal. I don't know. I think a pheasant... or maybe a monkey? Hiroshi Takemura (Touma) - I don't know. Sasaku Nozomu (Shin) - Yeah, that sounds just like him, alright. (laughs) Even though the question was asked 5 minutes earlier.
